UCL Phonetics and Linguistics

This site describes work carried out in the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics at University College London investigating the enhancement of natural speech.

Two different approaches can be taken to increasing the intelligibility of speech in noise: one is to reduce the effects of noise on speech after contamination has taken place; the other is to process speech before contamination so as to make it more able to survive the competing noise.  We have adopted the second approach and have developed a strategy for taking clean speech before contamination and enhancing its intelligibility in adverse listening conditions by enhancing key acoustic features... The work has been carried out by Valerie Hazan, Mark Huckvale, Marta Ortega and Andrew Simpson.
The research has been funded by two consecutive grants from the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council ( EPSRC).
